It’s important to begin planning well in advance of your departure date
with your newest member of the family. Proper planning will
help
lessen the stress for you and your pet and provide you with realistic
expectations of international pet travel.
First and foremost you need
to contact your airline carrier with
which you plan to travel. All major airlines have information
on their
websites that direct you through this process and should be able to
answer any questions you may have.
Just to highlight some of
the important issues:
Does your carrier accept animals for travel?
Several “charter” airlines do not!
Do they ride in the cabin or the
pressurized cargo hold?
Is there a limit to the number of pets per flight?
Do you have the proper container for
transporting your pet?
All require the hard plastic carriers.
Do I have to change planes?
It is suggested to travel on a non-stop flight if possible when
traveling with a pet.
Are there outside temperature restrictions
for your departure and arrival city?
Is there an age restriction?
(some puppies may be too young to travel)
Are there any special vaccinations my pet
will need before I can bring him home?
Most Airlines require your pet to have all of the standard vaccines
which you can have
Administered (if not done so already) in Playa del Carmen.
Should I sedate my pet for
travel?
This is not generally recommended for air travel. As is can put your
pet at risk by throwing off their equilibrium.
What documents will I need to travel with
my pet?
Again airlines require proof of current vaccinations signed
by a veterinarian.
How and where will my pet clear customs?
What are the costs involved in
taking my pet home? All airlines charge an extra fee
When transporting pets. Contact your airline carrier for
specific charges.
